March 2012 Meeting Summary

Thanks to all that attended last Wednesday's meeting, another great turnout with several first timers!
Special thanks to the Solis family for opening up their home for our neighborhood meeting.

The following is a brief summary:
1) Neighborhood Watch Training Debrief - Neighbors who attended last month's training session hosted by the Police Department discussed what they had learned. The good news, as I have said before, is that we in Valley View Acres already do a lot of the things that make a neighborhood watch successful. The key is to keep an eye out for suspicious people and activities and report them immediately to the Police. We also discussed purchasing Neighborhood Watch signs to post in the neighborhood. We'll be taking a collection in the next couple months to make that purchase. We'd appreciate any contribution to help defray the costs of the signs.

2) Police Update.  Officer Swafford was kind enough to join our meeting, providing updates on law enforcement goings on that are of interest to our neighborhood as well as fielding questions from neighbors on various topics. Thanks to Officer Swafford!
3) Code Enforcement Update. We discussed a few code enforcement actions currently pending in the neighborhood related to unkempt properties that are health and safety issues as well as aesthetic ones.
4) The Claw Update. The City will be cutting back its use of the "claw" for purpose of green waste pickup in favor of increased use of the 90 gallon green waste bins some of us already have. We discussed alternatives to the bins, including getting neighbors together to make joint dump runs for times when the bins are simply inadequate to handle the quantity of green waste generated and increasing our use of compost piles. Here's a handy link for those of you interested in composting: http://www.howtocompost.org/

Also, here is a link to a recent Sacramento Bee article on the topic of the Claw:

5) Upcoming Events:
Annual Easter Egg hunt hosted by our very own Dennis Boyd. This year's festivities will be held at 11:00am on Saturday, April 7th at Dennis' place located at 5610 Sorento Road!
Our semi-annual Neighborhood Cleanup will be scheduled for a Saturday in May. More details to come.

As always, let me know if you have any questions or would like something discussed in an upcoming meeting or feel free to leave comments or questions in the comment section below.
Thanks
Nick Avdis
